Letter from Carlton Woods

Dear Friends:

Welcome to BlueWater’s 7th season!  Our series is filled with exciting music in the true chamber music style.

We open on Saturday, September 17th at the beautiful Breen Center for the Performing Arts in Ohio City with a “Near West Neighborhood Series” concert featuring a very special guest soloist—Peter Otto, First Associate Concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra.  Peter offers us his interpretation of Dvorak’s wonderful Violin Concerto while the orchestra adds George Bizet’s brilliant Symphony in C, penned when he was a mere 17.  I will be on the podium to conduct this thrilling music!

Strings Galore, on November 5th at Plymouth Church UCC in Shaker Heights, will be led by guest conductor Jacob Sustaita, Associate Conductor of the Akron Symphony.  The program features the fabulous string section of BlueWater and includes seldom-heard works by African-American composers George Walker and William Grant Still as well as Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue and Bartok’s historic Divertimento for Strings.  This concert will be repeated at 4 pm on Sunday, November 6th at Pilgrim Congregational UCC in Tremont on our “Near West Neighborhood Series.”

BlueWater will venture into the “conductor-less” realm for its February 18th return to The Breen Center.  The program, coordinated by concertmaster Kenneth Johnston, will feature three landmark works for enlarged chamber ensemble in their original form.  Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll (a birthday present to his wife Cosima), Britten’s youthful Sinfonietta and Copland’s suite from the ballet Appalachian Spring will sure to bring thoughts of warmer weather!  This is also a “Near West Neighborhood Series” program.

Our May 13th offering at Plymouth Church UCC brings BlueWater’s own Principal Clarinetist Amitai Vardi in a special program titled “Flying High.”   The orchestra will perfom Respighi’s colorful The Birds and Haydn’s delightful “Hen” Symphony.  Ami will be featured in Mozart’s great gift to the clarinet world—his Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra.  I will be back on the podium to celebrate the onset of summer in this musical collage.

BlueWater is persistent in its quest for artistic excellence.  We are “From Cleveland, For Cleveland,” featuring NE Ohio’s top musicians in an intermission-less program entertaining for all.  Get your season tickets, tell your friends and come enjoy the music of BlueWater!

Best,

Carlton
