All Hail the Horn
BlueWater opens its ninth season with an afternoon concert at The Breen, featuring the magic of Mozart and the French horn. Cleveland Orchestra hornist Richard King is the virtuosic soloist in two masterpieces written for the instrument. Audience favorite Daniel Meyer returns to lead the orchestra in Dumbarton Oaks, Stravinsky’s nod to the Brandenburg Concertos of Bach. Closing the program is the exciting El Amor Brujo by Manuel de Falla. Spanish rhythms abound as mezzo Corrie Stallings sings this tale of spellbound love.

Opulent Oboe and Scintillating Symphony
BlueWater Principal Oboist Martin Neubert is featured soloist in the Neo-Classical concerto by Lukas Foss. Charming melodies overflow in this lesser known American work. Symphony #103 is one of Haydn’s twelve “London” symphonies and was enthusiastically reviewed at its premiere as “a fine mixture of grandeur and fancy.” Its nickname comes from the long drumroll that begins the piece. Opening the concert is a favorite by Beethoven. Tiffany Chang, formerly of Baldwin Wallace University, makes her BlueWater debut.

Resonate Reinvention
Emotions soar throughout our February concert as “reinvented” works are highlighted. Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov incorporates the music of an accordionist into his melodious piece Sidereus. Bruckner’s Adagio, called “one of the deepest chamber works since Beethoven” is arranged for string orchestra by Lucas Drew. Prolific composer Vivaldi reworked his own material into the Concerto for Two Cellos. Capping the program are the ethereal tunes of Schubert’s Fifth Symphony. Daniel Meyer, Artistic Director of the Erie Philharmonic, conducts.

The BlueWater season concludes with a unique concert of classic tales expressed in music. David Diamond interprets the story of Romeo and Juliet while Maurice Ravel gives his musical impressions of Mother Goose. This charming program, perfect for children of all ages, also features tuneful works by Corigliano and Elgar. Daniel Meyer conducts.

Scott MacPherson and the Cleveland Chamber Choir combine forces with BlueWater in its first program of major choral works. The festive Ascension Oratorio contrasts with Corigliano’s introspective cantata, set to a poem by Dylan Thomas. Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances for orchestra unites the two vocal masterpieces.

BlueWater’s sensuous strings take the stage in a program of works inspired by the night. Mozart’s famous “A Little Night Music,” is complemented by the Dvorak Nocturne for Strings and the orchestra version of Schoenberg’s romantic tone poem “Transfigured Night.” The group will be led from the concertmaster chair by Ken Johnston.

Cleveland soprano Laura Pedersen joins BlueWater in Barber’s dreamy rhapsody with the nostalgic text by James Agee. Daniel Meyer, Artistic Director of the Erie Philharmonic, conducts Ravel’s orchestral suite with its impeccably detailed instrumental colors. Schubert’s Second Symphony, written when he was only 17, already abounds with his trademark melodies and lyricism.

BlueWater’s opening concert is highlighted by special guest soloist Mark Kosower, Principal Cellist of The Cleveland Orchestra. His “eloquent” and “red-blooded” playing will captivate and amaze in the virtuosic Second Concerto of Haydn and the seldom heard grand duet for violin and cello by Saint-Saens. Guest Conductor Octavio Mas-Arocas returns to Cleveland to lead the orchestra in one of Beethoven’s most popular symphonies.
